In 2016, I began my study abroad experience in Spain. I studied Engineering in Seville, Spain. The experience I gained from studying abroad in Europe was priceless. The year before my experience, I knew very little about the programs available for Study Abroad. Most of the information online was scattered. Then when I visited Texas Tech, I learned that the Engineering Program required a Study Abroad experience and I was sold on my decision to attend Texas Tech. Today, I want to share with you a little bit about the colleges in New York that offer Study Abroad programs.
So, what colleges in New York offer Study Abroad Programs? More than 200 public and private universities and community colleges in the state of New York offer a vibrant and broad range of Study Abroad programs. Colleges within the State University of New York system and the City University of New York System, and many private colleges and universities offer study abroad programs. This article highlights the programs at New York University, SUNY Plattsburgh, and CUNY’s Brooklyn College and Queensborough Community College.

New York University (NYU)
NYU is a private university in New York city with enrollment exceeding 60,000 students. More than 3000 undergrads at NYU participate in study abroad programs each year. Graduate students also participate in study abroad. Your experience begins with determining your goals for study abroad.
If a specific destination is your primary goal,NYU’s global network offers programs throughout the world at NYU locations in Dubai, UAE; Accra, Ghana; Berlin, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; London, England; Madrid, Spain; Paris, France; Prague, Czech Republic; Shanghai, China; Sydney, Australia; and Tel Aviv, Israel.
Amazingly, NYU hosts programs in many other countries offering specific programs, such as an International Theatre Workshop in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; an Arts and Science Summer in Athens, Greece; and an International Health Policy and Prospects program in Geneva, Switzerland.
If earning credits toward your academic degree is your goal, NYU’s global network allows students to select from multiple academic programs that will give you the opportunity to experience a new culture and maybe learn a new language, all while earning credits toward your degree. For example, NYU’s Summer Study Abroad Program allows students to earn 3 to 8 academic credits. These summer opportunities are available to undergraduate and graduate students and you may select from dozens of programs.
If you want hands-on experience while living and learning in a metropolitan European city, or even in a less population-dense location, there is a program available to you that will help your journey to learn and explore new cultures, all with fellow NYU students and faculty.
One exciting and unique program for freshman is NYU’s Liberal Studies or Global Liberal Studies First Year Away Program. This program allows you to complete your first year of study at one of NYU’s centers in Florence, London, or Paris. For example, NYU Florence offers an experience titled: Steinhardt Music and Performing Arts Professions. This program offers a music curriculum at NYU Prague, located in the Czech Republic. The program is designed for music performance and music technology majors. Students in this program intern with local music organizations while studying music history, taking individualized lessons, and playing with various ensembles.

The State University of New York (SUNY)
The State University of New York (SUNY) is the largest comprehensive system of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States. SUNY includes 64 campuses across the state ranging from metropolitan and middle size cities to more rural campuses. Many of the colleges offer academic study abroad programs unique to their campus, so it is important to find out which campus offers a study abroad program of interest to you. Programs are available in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and Africa.
One example of a study abroad program at a SUNY affiliated university is SUNY Plattsburgh.
SUNY Plattsburg
SUNY Plattsburg offers a variety of enriching study abroad experiences in locations like Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, and the United Kingdom. I am intrigued by the academic programs at Australia’s University of Queensland, located approximately one hour from Brisbane. The University of Queensland is one of Australia’s largest universities. If you’re wanting a combination of strong academics, recreational opportunities and great weather, the University of Queensland might be just for you. Brisbane is just an hour away and offers a vibrant, modern city located on the famed Gold Coast. Beautiful beaches and a fun nightlife are just some of the benefits offered in nearby Brisbane. As for academics, the university offers multiple fields of study. Some of the offerings include Aboriginal and Australian studies, agriculture, anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art history, environmental science, hospitality and tourism management, marine sciences, natural and physical sciences.
Another example of a study abroad program at a SUNY affiliated university is The University at Albany.
SUNY’s University at Albany
SUNY’s University at Albany offers multiple study abroad experiences. One example is an exchange program with direct enrollment at Abo Akademi University for Swedish speakers in Finland. This program offers full-time study in courses taught in English. An example of the available fields of study include Finnish and Nordic studies, Finnish and Swedish languages, international law, public administration, comparative literature, comparative religion, history, musicology, chemical engineering, business, sociology, mathematics, and natural sciences.
The City University of New York (CUNY)
The City University of New York (CUNY) is the public university system of New York City. It is the largest urban university system in the United States. CUNY was founded in 1961 and comprises 25 campuses across the city’s five boroughs and includes eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college, and seven post-graduate institutions. Similar to SUNY, the colleges offer academic programs unique to their campus, so it is important to find out which campus offers a study abroad program that is of specific interest to you. Fortunately, many of the programs are available to all CUNY students, no matter which campus is your home college.
At this time, there are more than 150 programs available throughout the world. Five examples of opportunities available to CUNY students are: Documenting Maritime Environments in Wales, Transcultural Nursing and Global Health in Costa Rica, Street Photography in Italy, Media Production and Cultural Studies in South Korea, and Central Mediterranean Archaeology in Sicily.
CUNY Study Abroad offers students short-term, semester and year-long programs. Programs may be taught by CUNY faculty, or faculty of the partner institution.
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York
One example Study Abroad Program is the opportunity to study in China that is offered by Brooklyn College. This program offers you the opportunity to experience five cities in four weeks. A combination of business, history, speech and Chinese language provides the student with an extensive cultural and historical exploration of China. One of the many benefits includes an opportunity to interact with local people and places. Just imagine spending time in the beautiful cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an, as well as exploring the Forbidden City, climbing the Great Wall, and visiting Tiananmen Square. The courses are available to undergraduate and graduate students, and are taught by Brooklyn College faculty.
The cost of an experience like this one runs about $3500 for travel, insurance and other related expenses. Tuition is not included in this amount and would require payment of 3 – 7 credit hours at Brooklyn College tuition rates.
If you are interested in studying in China, this is just one of many opportunities available through a CUNY affiliated college or university.
Queensborough Community College, Bayside, NY
Queensborough Community College (QCC) is a member of the CUNY system. Students attending QCC may participate in the study abroad programs offered by member colleges in the system.
It’s exciting that a community college offers study abroad opportunities. Applicants should consult the list of programs available by the specific academic program, destination country, and host college.
Program details such as application details, price and procedures are available on the CUNY host college’s study abroad website. Always before selecting a program, you should be aware of how your study abroad classes will satisfy your degree requirements.
QCC requires prospective applicants to submit a completed inquiry form to the study abroad office and review the document “Steps for Study Abroad.”
Queensborough offers selected students a free one-week study abroad program in Salzburg, Austria, that focuses on international issues. The program is awarded each fall semester with travel to Austria during spring recess. Students should review the eligibility requirements before applying by submitting a completed inquiry form.
